Mission to Seafarers Sydney (MtS) has presented Life Memberships to pay tribute to two remarkable maritime industry leaders Graham Lightfoot AM and Captain Philip Holliday, CEO Port Authority of NSW. The award is in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to improving the tough lives of seafarers.

The presentation was part of the Thanksgiving and Christmas celebration honouring the work of MtS volunteers and supporters. Over 50 supporters including representatives of SBU, AMSA, AMWS and MtS volunteer Board members and staff united to give thanks for the opportunity to have cared for the often complex needs of over 10,000 seafarers in 2024.

MtS Chair Robert Dunn said the stories at the celebration event revealed the profound impact that the Mission to Seafarers can have on the lives of those we serve with the help of very special people like Graham, Philip and our volunteers.

“It is a testament to what can be achieved when compassion and commitment unite,” he said

“Graham’s life has been nothing short of remarkable—a true testament to dedication, service, perseverance and humility” Mr Dunn said. Mr Lightfoot has been instrumental in shaping the shipping industry, notably through his role in introducing containerisation to Western Australia. Beyond his professional success, he has invested his time and talents in organisations dedicated to the spiritual and physical well-being of seafarers including Sydney Bethel Union, Australian Mariners’ Welfare Society, the Merchant Navy War Memorial Fund and beyond. His exemplary legacy extends into his work with Rotary and his church.

“Graham’s empathy and commitment have profoundly impacted the maritime community. We are deeply grateful for his lifelong commitment to supporting the welfare of those who work at sea,” Mr Dunn said.

It was also his honour to recognise another champion of seafarer welfare Captain Philip Holliday, CEO of the Port Authority of New South Wales for his profound impact on countless lives.

“His leadership, from his time as Harbour Master in one of the UK’s busiest ports to his pivotal role as CEO of the Port Authority of NSW, has consistently prioritised safety, innovation, and the welfare of those who make the global supply chain possible—our seafarers,” he said. “His work behind the ground-breaking NSW Seafarers Fund will help to ensure the sustainability of essential services provided by maritime charities for years to come.”

“Philip’s legacy is one of innovation, generosity, and unwavering advocacy for the welfare of seafarers. His contributions have not only made New South Wales a global leader in seafarer welfare but have also provided a model for other ports to follow,” he said.

Mr Dunn also thanked the staff and volunteers “who are the heart and soul of this organisation. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, driving a bus, or ensuring a friendly smile, your kindness leaves a lasting mark on every seafarer who walks through our doors.”

To add to the celebration, David Colliss, Director Global HSEQ at The CSL Group presented a cheque to MtS Sydney for $3,500. This was one of four donations to Missions in ports visited by CSL ships around Australia. “Thank you – our crews greatly benefit from all your work,” he said. Our CEO Clayton Strong said we are blessed in so many ways with time, passion, and funds, and the day was a great way to celebrate all that The Mission is able to enjoy.
